The African Sustainable Development Forum

trans-parentThe African Sustainable Development Forum is a forum for frank dialogue on the successful implementation of the 17 Sustainable Development Goals and respective targets in Africa. The Forum will provide a platform for leaders, decision-makers and key stakeholders from across society to share resources and experiences in order to provide the necessary technical support for African countries in the implementation of the SDGs. This will bring together politicians, administrators, civil society, and business leaders; participants will be a blend of national, regional, and international agents who will be able to exchange ideas, experiences, and expectations.

2015 was a landmark year for sustainable development globally. The Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) were launched in September, 2015 following on from the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs). The SDGs represent a broader and more comprehensive framework that goes beyond poverty alleviation and meeting basic human needs, to encompass both sustainable economic growth and transformation across the world.

Given the importance of the Sustainable Development Goals, the Institute of African Leadership for Sustainable Development (UONGOZI Institute) in collaboration with the Office of H.E. Dr. Jakaya M. Kikwete, Former President of the United Republic of Tanzania, has established the African Sustainable Development Forum (ASDF).   The ASDF will be an annual event, with the theme of the initial event focusing on how Africa will implement the SDGs.

Objectives of ASDF

The main objective of the Forum is to promote and enable the successful implementation of the SDGs in Africa.

The ASDF also aims to:

  1. Achieve a shared understanding and appreciation by leadership across Africa of the supporting institutional frameworks for the successful implementation of the SDGs in Africa;
  2. Strengthen the network of African planners, implementers, and policy-makers to ensure optimum coordination and mainstreaming of SDG Implementation; and
  3. Raise awareness of the importance and relevance of the SDGs in and for Africa.
